A Quick History of Dentistry – What You Need to Know About Dentists and Their Science

Due to the remarkable work and progress that dentists and researchers have done in the past few decades, modern dentistry has been elevated to the status of a science by most, and even called a genuine art by others. Although skill has definitely played an important role in this, if we look at the history of dentistry, we will see a pattern that shows skill, talent and progress to have equally contributed to the remarkable evolution that dentistry has gone through during the past few years alone.

The history of dentistry dates back 9,000 years before our time to the very dawn of humanity. Early civilizations such as the Sumerians and the people of the Indus Valley Civilization were known by archaeologists to have used early forms of dentistry as early as 7,000 BC. Also, dentistry has been perfected later on by the ancient Romans, and it is even believed that dental surgery was the first type of specialized surgery that was ever used as a medical practice.

Today, dentistry in the Lakewood orthodontics offices and others has evolved to the status of a genuine science through the use of advanced imaging and X-ray technology, as well as through the development of advanced surgery and extraction methods. Cosmetic dentistry was developed later on, its modern form being known only in the past century, as dentists became proficient in using advanced methods to improve people’s smiles.
