How to Protect Your Braces During Your Thanksgiving Feast

Good Food At Thanksgiving Time

Thanksgiving feasts are not exactly braces-friendly, but with a little attention and care, you can go through the family meal without hurting your braces or your sensitive gums and teeth. Here is what you should pay attention to:
  • Food to avoid – chewy sweets, such as toffees or caramel apples and very hard foods, such as appetizers composed of nuts, crunchy vegetables, chips are to be avoided and so are foods that have lots of fibers, such as very lean meat;
  • Foods that you can enjoy – salads prepared from leafy greens, turkey and ham cut into very small pieces, the stuffing used for the turkey and soups are usually fine for people who wear braces. You can also have some pumpkin pie as long as it is made without nuts or you stay away from the crunchy nut crumbles;
  • Teeth cleaning – brushing and flossing your teeth properly right after you finish your meal is essential for the protection of your braces as well as for the health of your teeth, so take a few minutes after you take the last bite of pie to brush and floss your teeth, then finish the cleaning with an antibacterial mouthwash to ensure thorough cleanliness. Repeat the process whenever you grab a bite of cold turkey or pie later during the day, too.  Frequent trips to the Lakewood dentists and orthodontics offices can’t hurt either.
