How To Make Sure Your Insurance Covers Braces

Dental Insurance Coverage For Braces

Braces are not cheap and many people cannot afford them, if there is no alternative to paying on the nail.

But what if you have insurance?

The first thing you should understand is if you have a regular dental insurance, orthodontic treatment is not automatically covered, because orthodontic insurance must be purchased separately, considering that dental and orthodontic treatments are different.

Some medical plans provide orthodontic cover, but only if a Loveland orthodontics specialist determines that braces are a medical necessity for the patient.

Orthodontic benefits are typically paid over the treatment; only a very small percent of insurance companies pay in full, in one payment. However, orthodontic benefits may work in more than one way. Some plans have fixed co-pay, while other cover at a percentage.

There are also special situations that may happen during your orthodontic treatment. For example, if you relocate, you must inform your insurer about it; the installment payments will be stopped to your orthodontist. Also, if your employer changes insurance companies while you undergo your orthodontic treatment, you have to submit a claim to the new insurer to pick up the payments.

If you change employers, things can get more complicated. You will stop receiving benefits from your first employer and you must submit a claim to the new insurer, from your new employer. If there is a pre-existing clause in your new benefit, you may not be covered.
