The Most Commonly Asked Questions About Getting and Wearing Braces

Loveland Orthodontics Questions And Answers

Wearing braces isn’t always seen as a good experience. From the horror stories that our parents told us about having to wear braces in school, to the discomfort of having to avoid certain types of foods, a lot of myths and real issues are associated with wearing these devices. But which is which, and how can you gain clarity about this issue? Following are a few questions and answers from Loveland orthodontics professionals to help you do just that:

  1. Do they hurt? Kids will ask this, and in most cases the answer is a resounding “no.” Because braces are adjusted or even designed to mold according to the structure of your teeth, you’ll likely only experience some mild discomfort after wearing them for a longer period of time.
  2. Can I eat the same kinds of things I’d normally have when I don’t wear braces? Adjusting to life with braces can be hard, but the good news is you can have a lot of the foods you’d normally have without them, including seafood, veggies, dairy, fruit, grains and various breads. Chewy, crunchy and hard foods should normally be avoided.
  3. How long do I have to wear braces before my teeth are corrected? Depending on the severity of your condition, your orthodontist might recommend that you wear braces for a period of six weeks to more than 18 months. In some cases, the amount of time you have to wear braces can extend to two full years.
