Wearing braces is not easy – even the most modern retainers cause a certain amount of discomfort and they also limit choices when it comes to food. Here are some common foods that can harm braces and should be avoided:
- Bread and pastry varieties that have a hard crust or hard particles – they may be delightful, but the crispy crust needs to be chewed and the hard, sharp-edged particles can hurt the gum and get stuck between the teeth and the braces. Whole-grain pastry with seeds should also be avoided for the same reason. Softer bread varieties, such as spongy, pre-cut bread is safer, though;
- Hard dairy product – hard cheese is best avoided, but yoghurt and soft cheese are safe;
- Sweets – all sweets that contain hard particles, such as nuts or caramel, should be avoided. They should be replaced with ice cream, soft chocolate, jelly, smoothies and shakes;
- Fish – fish is healthy and contains lots of valuable nutrients, but it also has bones that can hurt the gums as well as the teeth. However, boneless sea food, such as decorticated shrimps and oysters are safe;
- Hard fruits – biting into hard fruit should be avoided, but properly peeled and de-seeded fruit cut into small pieces can be included into your diet. For more detailed information on keeping your braces clean, go to the Comfort Braces of Loveland.
