How Do Teeth Move With Braces

comfort dental braces how they work

Dental braces work by applying constant pressure to the teeth, in a certain direction, over a certain period of time. The force applied cannot be too great as it could damage the integrity and functionality of teeth and periodontal ligaments.

The results may not appear immediately; gentle pressure is needed for extended periods of time for the teeth to change position in a healthy way. The stress created in the periodontal ligaments due to this constant pressure triggers a biological process that leads to a restructuring of the alveolar bone (the bone in which there are the roots of the teeth). During this process, the bone on the compressed side will be gradually reabsorbed, while on the other side a new bone structure is synthesized to fill the gap left by the movement of the tooth and to support a new position.

A tooth moves (changes position) about a millimeter a month, during the orthodontic treatment, but this can vary depending on how the patient responds to that treatment. The pressure on the teeth must be adjusted by the orthodontist every 3-4 weeks (depending on each patient), and the treatment can last between 1 and 3 years or even longer, depending on the severity of the case.
