Using mouthwash is a daily experience for most of us and it has been long considered essential for achieving proper mouth hygiene by Comfort Braces Loveland area and others. However, researchers are pointing out several crelated to the daily usage of mouthwashes – here are some concerns:

  • Understanding the microbiome of the mouth – the mouth is home to millions of different types of bacteria. A few of them are responsible for bad breath and for the development of cavities, but most of them are good bacteria that help the mouth stay healthy;
  • Mouthwashes do not differentiate between good and bad bacteria – mouthwashes are created to kill bacteria without categorizing the bacteria found. This means that they kill both good and bad bacteria, which also means that the oral cavity is left cleaner, but also that good bacteria get killed, too;
  • How to use mouthwash correctly – experts agree that stopping to use mouthwash altogether is a bad idea. What they recommend is to limit the use of mouthwash to every other day, using it on one day and skipping it the next. That interval is sufficient for the good bacteria to start proliferating again and to protect the mouth, but not long enough for the bad bacteria to cause any harm.
