Best Food To Eat When You Have Braces

Often, due to eating restrictions and light tooth pain in the days after putting on their braces, patients are not sure about what is the best food to eat in their situation.  Some of the really good Lakewood dentists and orthodontics offices will provide you with a list of do’s/don’ts, so you don’t have to try and remember everything.

In this article, we pass down a list of foods that can be used to create various meals for people wearing braces. But first, keep in mind that regardless the food, it must be cut into small pieces, as well as chewed slowly and carefully.

 

Our suggestions

  • Dairy: yogurt, soft cheese: brie, cheddar; milk-based drinks, pudding
  • Bread and bakery products: any type of soft bread; muffins, soft-textured cakes, tortilla
  • Pasta and cereal-based products: noodles, rice – risotto, polenta
  • Meat and sausages: boiled chicken, lightly fried chicken, grill chicken, meatballs, minced meat recipes
  • Fish and seafood: lightly cooked fish fillets, fish croquettes, canned tuna, salmon
  • Soups
  • Vegetables: boiled carrots, potato purée, cabbage salad, avocado, sautéed spinach, beans, hummus
  • Fruits: baked bananas, grapes, fruit juices and shakes
  • Dessert: sweet cheese pie, cream pies, pancakes, pudding, chocolate cream etc.

The following foods are prohibited for as long as you wear your braces:

  • foods that are hard to chew like hazelnuts, popcorn, fresh carrots
  • crispy bread, potato chips, crackers
  • sticky foods such as caramels or jelly
