Tips for Getting Back To School with Braces

Treating Braces Orthodontist Lakewood Back To School Tips

The summer holiday is over and something has changed for your child: they now have braces. Getting back to school with braces can be difficult for anyone, so here are a few practical tips to help you child:

  1. Prepare a Braces Care Kit

Your child should carry a small kit for caring for the braces and for the entire mouth, for that matter. This kit should contain a toothbrush with soft bristles, fluoride toothpaste and dental floss. In addition, add a gentle care lip balm, as lips tend to get bruised during the first weeks of wearing braces.

  1. Get a Mouth Guard for PE Classes

Getting accidentally hit in the mouth during the PE class can lead to serious injuries for kids wearing braces. Even if they only practice regular sports like basketball or tennis, your child should still wear a mouth guard. It would be a good idea to talk to the child’s PE teacher and find ways in which your child can avoid risky sports like baseball while they have to wear braces.

  1. Make Sure Your Child Has a Water Bottle All the Time

When wearing braces, the mouth tends to get dry, especially during the first weeks. Your child should always have a water bottle available. Water is not only good for hydration, but also for washing out food particles that may get stuck in the braces.  As always visit the orthodontist Lakewood office for routine care.
