Flossing is a great way to achieve adequate oral hygiene, but very few people know how to use their long pieces of strong string correctly. Here is some advice:
- Preparations – break off about 17-18 inches of floss and wrap most of it around your middle fingers, then hold the free part of the floss between your thumbs and forefingers;
- Guiding the floss – apply the floss into the thin space between two adjacent teeth and move the floss gently to dislodge any food particles that have become stuck in the space. Continue until you reach the gum line – when your floss has reached that point, stop moving the floss, then bend it into a C shape against one tooth and move the floss gently again, to clean the even smaller space between the gum and the individual tooth. Perform the same operation with each interdental space;
- A mistake to avoid – the thin string can easily cut into your gums, so pay increased attention when you reach the gum line;
- When to floss – most people floss after brushing, but many experts like Comfort Braces Loveland area recommend flossing before brushing, that way you can use the toothbrush to clean the surface of the teeth, without having to worry about stuck food particles.
